Maintenance Welder

(Maintenance and Repair Worker)

What Maintenance Welders Do

Maintenance welders perform welding and metal fabrication tasks to maintain and repair various types of equipment and structures. They inspect and assess equipment and structures for damages that require welding repairs. Maintenance welders interpret blueprints, sketches, or specifications to determine the required method and sequence of welding operations. They use a variety of welding techniques, such as arc welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding, to repair and maintain equipment and structures. They test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws and ensure conformance to specifications. Maintenance welders maintain welding tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working order and perform preventative maintenance tasks to identify potential issues before they lead to serious problems. They repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps, and they cut metal, join metal together, or fill holes using extreme heat, gas, and sophisticated welding equipment. These professionals work across various industries such as construction, manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace.

Education Required

These jobs typically require a high school diploma or equivalent. Most maintenance welders need some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience, usually requiring anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees. Professional certification, such as an AWS (American Welding Society) welding certificate, is often preferred and can improve job opportunities. Training in vocational subjects such as blueprint reading and welding is useful. Many maintenance welders learn through on-the-job training or short-term programs at technical schools. Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to welding and industrial maintenance is essential. Apprenticeship programs are also available for this occupation, providing hands-on training in welding techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
