Ironworker

(Structural Iron and Steel Worker)

What Ironworkers Do

Ironworkers install structural and reinforcing iron and steel to form and support buildings, bridges, roads, and other structures. They raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. Ironworkers move prefabricated iron and steel by hand and signal crane operators to lift and position materials. They use shears, rod-bending machines, torches, hand tools, and welding equipment to cut, bend, and weld structural and reinforcing iron and steel. They align structural materials vertically and horizontally using tag lines, plumb bobs, lasers, and levels to ensure proper positioning. Ironworkers also assemble precut metal buildings and may work with cranes and derricks that move materials around construction sites. Some ironworkers specialize as reinforcing iron and rebar workers, positioning and securing steel bars or mesh in concrete forms for reinforcement. They work at great heights and must wear safety equipment to reduce the risk of falls and other injuries.

Education Required

Most ironworkers learn their trade through a 3- or 4-year apprenticeship program. A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required to enter an apprenticeship. For each year of the program, apprentices must complete at least 144 hours of related technical instruction and 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. Nearly all apprenticeship programs teach both reinforcing and structural ironworking. Technical training includes mathematics, blueprint reading and sketching, general construction techniques, safety practices, and first aid. On-the-job training covers using tools and equipment, handling and measuring materials, cutting and laying rebar, and constructing metal frameworks. Courses in math, blueprint reading, and welding are useful preparation. Additional certifications in welding, rigging, and crane signaling may increase job opportunities.
